What is a featured location? #
A featured location is a stop on your tour that potential customers can preview before they buy. This preview location, along with the first three locations on your tour, helps listeners understand what makes your tour special and can significantly impact their purchase decision. Listeners who preview a tour are, on average, 3.6 times more likely to buy it. They’re also more satisfied with their purchase after completing the tour, because they already know what you sound like, and have a better sense of what to expect.
Tour previews #
Listeners can preview the first three locations of a tour for free. These locations are automatically set up for preview and listeners can preview differently on the web and apps:
- On the web, they can click “Preview Tour” to listen to the audio, read the script, and scroll through location images
- On the app, clicking “Preview Tour” on the About screen lets them download the route and audio for the first three locations
Featured location preview #
Featured locations aren’t automatically set up for preview, so you have to choose one for each of your tours for listeners to preview. Featured locations appear differently on the web and in the apps:
- On the web, listeners can preview the featured location by scrolling to it in the list of tour sites. You can share the link or QR code to your featured location to promote your tour on social media, emails, or your website.
- In the app, featured locations offer an inline preview, which means they appear on tour cards under Explore, in search results, and destination lists. When a listener clicks on “Preview” they can view the location on the map, and scroll through full-screen images while listening to the location audio.

Setting up your featured location #
Step-by-step instructions
- Open your publisher dashboard and scroll down to Tours
- Click on the Distribution button next to the specific tour
- Open Featured location
- Choose your ideal featured location from the list (you can even listen to the audio if you like)
- Add up to five high-quality images
- Click Save to update your selection
How do I know that I set up the featured location correctly?
You can make sure your featured location was updated correctly through the tour and on your dashboard.
The tour: Preview your featured location on both the web player and the VoiceMap app to verify that the location and images appear correctly.
Your dashboard:
- Scroll down to your Tours section
- Look for the green check mark under Featured location
- A green check mark means it has been updated
- A grey dash means it still needs to be set up
- If needed, click the Distribution button to make changes
Choosing your featured location #
The best featured location should have some of these qualities:
- A strong sense of place
- A surprise element
- Great sound design
- Engaging storytelling
- A useful overview of a major attraction
- A clear perspective or unique take
- A touch of humor
Remember, you’re selling the tour’s unique experience—not just the location itself.
Image requirements #
For the best presentation, follow these specifications:
- Width: Minimum 2048px (ideal)
- Height: 2075px ideal (can be larger)
- File size: 500 KB to 1MB
- Format: JPEG or PNG
- Quantity: Up to 5 images per location
For specific instructions on resizing images, refer to our documentation.
What should I do if I have translated versions of my tour?
If your tour is available in multiple languages, you’ll need to set up a featured location for each translation. While you can use the same location across all languages, you have to add it separately for each translation through the Distribution tab.
